Frequently Asked Question

Is drinking bottled water necessary for children and generally for human?
Generally speaking water is the healthiest drink. 60% of adults’ body and 80% of newborns’ body is made of water. What matters is the balance of minerals in the body that should not be too high or too low. In fact, your body needs water but also minerals to function properly. Remember that all kind of water can quench your thirst, but bottled water has useful minerals. A bottled water with proper minerals such as Damavand can provide a part of minerals such as calcium, magnesium and bicarbonates that are beneficial and needed for health.
Why when preparing tea with bottled water some white and colorful particles appear in it?
Each bottled water has unique mineral content such as calcium and magnesium, which gives them their unique taste. When exposed to sharp change of temperature (freezing or heating temperature), its bicarbonates that are dissolved convert to carbonates and settle in the water which is what happens when making tea. These minerals have no harmful impact on body. It is good to know that this happens to all waters containing mineral; less or more.
What is difference between Natural mineral water and drinking water? (What are bottled water types?
As you know, in the market there are two types of bottled water: Mineral water and drinking water. Natural mineral waters are those which are from a natural source, untouched by men without any process but physical filters. Minerals in Natural Mineral water source should be constant in all seasons. Drinking water can be as well provided from a natural source of underground water or wells. However, Drinking waters can be filtered and processed either physically or chemically.. Drinking waters from a natural source are obtained by physical refining. Damavand water comes from a natural source and is filtered physically.
What is TDS?
The “Total Dissolved Solids” (TDS) is the sum of all the minerals in the water, which are un-harmful and inactive in the water for example calcium and magnesium.
Please explain about the nitrates in the water, can boiling the water destroy the nitrates?
Nitrates, like other elements should be at the level sets by international standards.. According to the National Iranian Institute of Standards and WHO, maximum allowed level of nitrates in water is 50 mg per liter .All bottled waters in Iran are checked by the National Iranian Institute of Standards, and therefore their Nitrates content below the maximum authorized. WHO recommends less than 10mg per liter for water to be suitable for babies. Damavand is suitable for infants. Finally, the nitrates will not be destroyed by boiling. When you boil water you actually increase the amount of Nitrates it contains per liter: the Nitrates stay while the H2O evaporates, hence increasing the Nitrates concentration.
Please provide information about Damavand Mineral Water Company and Danone.

Has Damavand water Source changed during recent years?
Since 1974, date of its launch, Damavand water has always been sourced from the same aquifers. However, caption processes have evolved and changed over the years, in order to follow the most updated technologies and the Iranian National Standard. Damavand is extracted from deep underground aquifers, benefiting from its natural mineral layers protection.
Should be about TDS Please explain TH and Electrical Conductivity?
TH (Total Hardness) and Electrical Conductivity are two items related to water measurement linked to the mineral content. This index has no relation with water quality.

Symposium on water in health and nutrition

۱۳۹۵/۰۸/۱۲

Attendees at the press conference during the “Symposium on Water in Health and Nutrition” mentioned that in Food Industry the corporation between Industry and University guarantees food safety; they also emphasized on the role of fluid consumption and also consumption habit of healthy beverages in society’s general health; moreover they believed promoting correct water consumption is a necessity. According to the press conference headquarters of “Symposium on Water in Health and Nutrition” held on May 28th 2012 in the National Nutrition and Food Industry Research Institute with collaboration of Damavand Mineral Water Company, Majid HajiFaraji the Director of Institute, Vincent Larnaud General Manager of Damavand with few international guest speakers and local experts responded to the queries that journalists and experts asked. Attendees in this press conference while highlighting on the importance of collaboration between Industry and University in Nutrition, emphasized on the social responsibility of manufacturers in industrial section and also indicated the responsibility of both, University and manufacturers toward trust building about the products.Vincent Larnaud, mentioning the transparent policy in manufacturing and inviting media and public to visit Damavand Plant considered that the standards in Iran are precisely defined and health surveillance do not leave a single doubt on food manufacturing. Larnaud stated the lack of scientific researches in Food Industry and mentioned that: “we did a research on habits and the amount of fluid consumption among residents of Tehran, for the first time in corporation with the National Nutrition and Food Industry Research Institute as the center of nutrition science; its findings could be noteworthy for both experts community and manufacturers” In response to a question about the quality of bottled waters in Iran and existing rumors he stated that: regarding rumors not much can be said, as existing standards and regulations should be considered the basis of judgment. However, manufacturers should not solely rely on standards. He added that social responsibilities and professional commitments necessitate that producing at the highest quality level should be always on manufacturers’ agenda. Regarding people’s concern over bottled waters, Dr. HajiFaraji the Director of the National Nutrition and Food Industry Research Institute noted that: “sometimes rumors are dispersed with no scientific basis or experimental evidence. And this is the responsibility of scientific and academic community to verify the truthfulness of these rumors and to announce it to public” He indicates that trusting rumors is indefensibly wrong and added: in the Institute, as the center of nutrition science, we have the researches in this regard on our agenda. Fortunately the research recently conducted on the habits and the amount of fluid consumption is a good commencement on these types of researches on water and other kinds of fluids. HajiFaraji indicating the role of advertisement on some nutritional products, such as non standard devices for water purification, affirmed that the subject of fluids specifically water is of high sensitivity and needs to be taken care of in order to produce high quality products. The Director of the National Nutrition and Food Industry Research Institute continued: “apart from all concerns, the thing is to promote the culture of correct and sufficient fluid intake and to promote the right habit in this regard. He expressed that the key to sustainable industrial development is the close corporation between industry and universities, and today more than ever we need a deep integrity in this regard. He explained nowadays there are no longer traditional borders between University and Industry and fortunately we are on the right track, but to achieve the desired level of interaction between industrial production and scientific research, we have to study the pathology of failures. Haji Faraji continued: “the corporation between The National Nutrition and Food Industry Research Institute and Damavand Mineral Water Company regarding the fluid intake of adults in Tehran is an example of a useful and productive interaction between university and industry and we hope this trend is continuous and stable” Stavros Kavouras, Postdoctoral Physiologist from Yale University of America that attended the conference as a guest speaker, responding a question about negative effects of plastic bottles on the fluid inside the bottle said that: “no scientific finding approves that standard bottles have an impact on the fluid inside. He stated that the bottles, on which “PET” is printed, are completely standard and added that these bottles are disposable and are not made for multiple uses. Also these bottles are designed just for water” Kavouras continued: therefore bottles should not be reused or to be filled with carbonated drinks or hot fluids. In the Symposium on Water in Health and Nutrition Alexis Klein PhD in Biochemistry and Nutrition from Dijon Medicine School of France, Abbas Basiri PhD in Urology from the Medical University of Shahid Behesht, Stavros Kavouras PhD in Human Exercise Physiology from Yale University of America, Esmat Naseri PhD in Nutritional Science from Shahid Beheshti University represented their articles on the role of water and its relation with sicknesses and responded the queries of journalists during the press conference.During this symposium held on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of The National Nutrition and Food Industry Research Institute establishment, the report and findings of the first research on fluid intake habits of adult population in Tehran was also presented as per below: An overview on the study of fluid intake The pattern of fluid intake in Tehran According to the results of the first survey was conducted to determine the pattern of fluid intake of adults in Tehran, 10% of men and 25% of women, drink less than 1.2 liters of fluids a day which is much lower than WHO standards for a healthy body; especially considering climate and air temperature of Tehran (27-39° C) when this research has been conducted. The results show women with a similar pattern of fluid intake comparing to men, generally drink half a liter of fluids less than men. Considering the fact that women need about 500 ml less than men, the risk of low fluid intake is the same for both genders. Moreover, 60% drink less than two liters of fluids a day, from which 17% drink less than 1.2 liters. In addition to low-drinking (daily consumption of 1.2 liters of liquid) that has negative effects on physical health, the pattern of fluid intake and beverage type is also important. For example, the proportion of water that people are taking, also how much they drink beverages such as tea, coffee and carbonated soft drinks can also have an influence on health. Measurement of fluid intake in this study showed that the average fluid intake in the total samples was about 1.9 liters a day, from which half of it was water intake. Then hot beverages (tea was around 80%) has the second position. The recommendations of health organizations also emphasize on provision of water from at least half of the fluid intakes then the hot beverages like tea and coffee. Caloric contribution from beverage is medium; 20% drink more than 1 cans a day (330ml). 35% of the population has a liquid caloric intake above WHO recommendation (10% of total diet). Consumption of diet/light beverage is non-significant (14ml/day in average). Consumption patterns of different types of fluid is different in different age groups. Consumption of soft drinks, energy drinks, fruit juices among the younger age group (18-29 years) is more than older age groups, while the consumption of hot drinks in people of 50 to 65 years is significantly more than young people. While studies show that the amount of fluid intake in overweight and obese individuals is significantly higher than underweight and normal weight individuals. Overweight people often drink more water and hot drinks comparing to others; all these findings can be effective in medical and clinical researches and to explain the importance of fluid intake in the healthy body and mind. The importance of adequate intake of fluids The fact is that there is no universal agreement about the essential amount of fluids to take. The rate for adult men is defined 3.7 liters a day in US to 1.2 liters a day in China. The lack of measurable indicators to define the optimal amount of fluid intake has sparked controversy. But if we want a reasonable basis for the required amount of fluids to consume, we can consider the recommendations of WHO; based on that, every woman should consume 2.2 liters of fluids a day and men 2.9 liters from which water is the safest and most useful. Consequences of dehydration Dehydration can cause alteration on physical performance, poor concentration, headaches and lethargy but more importantly inadequate fluid intake causes the body to continuously absorb all the water in kidneys and produce concentrated urine and this can lead to a variety of acute and chronic diseases, such as chronic kidney disease and kidney stones. Today these diseases are rising around the world which results in increased medical costs and health care. Studies show that fluid intake can prevent chronic kidney disease. Accordingly, those who drink more than 3 liters of liquid a day comparing to those who drink less than 1.5 liters of a day, are about 30% to 50% lower risk of impaired kidney function. Adequate intake of water also causes increased urination and reduces the likelihood of kidney stones formation. Adequate intake of water is effective on general health, and also prevents urethral diseases which can result in reducing the costs of health care. Conclusions and recommendations According to the abovementioned results, low fluid intake between Tehran inhabitants is much lower than what WHO recommends. We understand the inadequate intake of fluids when recommendation on nutrition and diet are usually focused on foods and beverages have been neglected. If adequate and proper fluid intake is neglected, the society will face heavy costs and negative effects. So, the principles and the correct pattern of fluid intake is something that everyone should pay attention to; some of these principles are expressed below: Drink enough water to compensate the water loss: Each individual loses about 2.6 liters of water a day through skin, respiration, urine etc. Some of this water will be compensated through food. The rest, about 2 liters for men and 1.5 liters for women, should be supplied through fluids. Water is the only natural beverage with no calories Some beverages contain sugar, acids and additives. Drink water regularly throughout the day. Thirst is a warning that shows the body has lost water. So do not wait until the feeling of thirst gets dominant. Attention to fluid intake during exercise is important Energy consumed during exercise and physical activity, warms the body. Regulating body temperature causes sweating. In order to compensate the lost water, drink before, during and after exercise. In hot weather plenty of fluids should be drunk The water loss through sweating must be compensated so in hot weather plenty of fluids should be drunk. Lactating mothers should take more fluids Mother's milk is composed of 88% of water and lactating women need to maintain their body fluids. During this period they should try to drink more fluids than usual (600 to 700 ml a day). Aging is associated with urinary frequency, more fluids intake is needed: when you are older you may feel less thirst. However, during this time, the body loses its ability to collect urine; therefore more water is lost through urine. To provide body with enough water, adequate fluids should be taken.
